Top Rides For The 2017 Season
Everyone has their favourites rides at Alton Towers, these are our top picks that we’re looking forward to riding again this year.
No1. The Smiler
The Smiler officially opened on the 31st May 2013 and held the world record for 14 inversions on a roller coaster.
Nemesis opened in March 1994 and celebrated its 21st Birthday over the 2015 season. The ride is 716 meters long and features a top speed of 80 kilometres per hour . The four inversion roller coaster was the first of its kind to be built outside the USA and is still considered one of the top rides of its kind in the world.
Originally Air, one of the first rides in the world to where you’re positioned horizontall, the ride was given an extra dimension in 2016 and was transformed to be one of the first VR rides in the world and renamed Galactica.
Oblivion opened on 14th March 1998 and was the worlds first vertical drop roller coaster. The ride reaches a top speed of 109 kilometres per hour, one of the fastest rides in the UK.
Rita first opened on the 1st April 2005 and is an accelerator coaster. The ride accelerates from 0 to 61.1mph in 2.5 seconds on the first leg of the ride, before negotiating high speed corners, dips and hills. The introduction at the start of the ride says it all ‘Keep your head back.. hold on tight… You must escape go go go!”.
Th13teen opened on 20th March 2010, replacing the iconic original roller coaster which stood on the same location since 1980, for over 28 years. Th13teen was the world’s first vertical free fall drop roller coaster, on which the track and train free fall approximately five metres in the dark!
7. Congo River Rapids
Congo River Rapids (formally named Grand Canyon Rapids) first opened in 1986. We think it’s one of the most fun rides at Alton Towers, the 8 seater ring carriages bump and wind down a fun and wet torrent of water canals, splashing and often soaking passengers along the route!
8. The Runaway Mine Train
The Runaway Mine Train opened on the 21st March 1992 and is currently the oldest roller coaster in operation. One of the more tame rides, it’s great fun for the younger kids as the high limit is only 0.9 meters tall.
