Jodrell Bank Observatory And Discovery Centre

Jodrell Bank 2017 - Visit Macclesfield

Jodrell Bank is a world famous observatory, here on the doorstep of Macclesfield. The state of the art facility is part of the centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester and was originally established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell. He was a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world!

The centre attracts thousands of visitors every year. Enjoy a wonderful day, learn more about the big bang and explore the wonders of the universe with hands on activities and the exhibition room or discover more about the history of the Lovell Telescope and the role it plays in today’s international space programme.

You’ll find a brilliant line up of events throughout the year, including the Bluedot Festival in July. For more information on events, visit their website or click here for their Facebook page –
