Macclesfield held it’s first Pride event in July 2018 and took over Market Square, with other events happening around bars in the town later in the evening and fantastic support from Macclesfield Town Council and local traders. The event attracted thousands of people over the day and evening and we’re looking forward to announcing the 2019 Macc Pride events as soon as details have been confirmed.
The local LGBT community have organised the event which included live music, entertainment on stage with food and drink available plus information stalls in the Market Square, and lots of fun for kids in St Michael’s Church grounds. The event was free, no tickets are required and was suitable for all ages.
The inaugural MaccPride was the idea of Sophie Armitt, 18 and Olivia Johnson, 19, members of the UTOPIA group, which is an LGBT+ group run by Cheshire East Youth Support Service, for young people aged 13-19, that offers a chance to meet others, get advice, and have fun. They have been supported by Cheshire East, Macclesfield Town Council, other youth services, and a Steering Group made up of members of the local LGBT community and their allies.
‘This is such an exciting time,’ said Sophie, who will be giving the Welcome speech to open the first MaccPride. ‘It really matters to me, because we’re showing people we’re no different, and also we’re celebrating diversity and promoting equality!’
A small amount of funding has been secured, but in order to make this day the best it can be and to continue into the future, MaccPride needs partners and sponsors who will commit to support this new event. The committee are asking local businesses if they would donate funding or raffle prizes, display a poster, and advertise in the programme. If you would like to help support MaccPride, please email on the address above.
